What the codes mean

The small print at the bottom of the Ravnica: City of Guilds card (#106).

106

  • 106Collector number: this card's place in the set list. Main-set cards print it over the set's card count.

Cards from 1998 to mid-2014 print the collector number over the set's card count (like 90/383) next to the copyright line. They have no rarity letter, set code or language code: the set symbol and its colour show the set and rarity.

How to read a Magic card: every part and code, on real cards.

Rulings (2)

  1. October 1, 2005

The instant or sorcery card never gets put back into your graveyard, even if it’s countered. You can’t cast it more than once.

  2. October 1, 2005

The instant or sorcery card is cast from your graveyard, not your hand. You choose modes, pay additional costs, choose targets, etc. for the spell as normal when casting it. Any X in the mana cost will be 0. Alternative costs can’t be paid.
