What the codes mean
The small print at the bottom of the Legends card (#203).
Printed before collector numbers, which started with Exodus in 1998. The bottom shows only the artist credit ("Illus.") and the copyright. Set symbols were all black before Exodus, and core sets before Sixth Edition have none.

Can’t be used on mana abilities because they don’t use the stack. They’ve already resolved by the time you get priority.
2016-06-08
Activated abilities contain a colon. They’re generally written “[Cost]: [Effect].” Some keywords are activated abilities and will have colons in their reminder text.
