What the codes mean

The small print at the bottom of the Ice Age card (#202).

Printed before collector numbers, which started with Exodus in 1998. The bottom shows only the artist credit ("Illus.") and the copyright. Set symbols were all black before Exodus, and core sets before Sixth Edition have none.

Rulings (3)

  1. 2004-10-04

You can’t choose to do fractional damage to a target.

  2. 2008-10-01

You divide the damage as you cast Meteor Shower, not as it resolves. Each target must be assigned at least 1 damage.

  3. 2008-10-01

A tip on how this math works: To deal a total of 1 damage, X is 0. The cost is zero mana + zero mana + one red mana = one red mana. To deal a total of 2 damage, X is 1. The cost is one generic mana + one generic mana + one red mana = two generic manaone red mana. To deal a total of 3 damage, X is 2. The cost is two generic mana + two generic mana + one red mana = four generic manaone red mana. And so on.
